Does spirulina have sexual benefits? What is true:

The advantages of taking spirulina as a food or supplement are countless, to the point of involving the whole psychosomatic sphere. But what about a positive effect on sex life and libido? Is it really true that spirulina has sexual benefits? If so, which ones? Let's clarify, based on the many properties of this superfood.

Why does spirulina have sexual benefits?

Known by the scientific name Arthrospira platensis, spirulina is commonly thought of as an alga. In fact it is a freshwater cyanobacterium, known since ancient times for its countless beneficial properties. The same properties that, on the basis of recognised scientific studies, have led organisations such as the WHO, UNESCO and NASA to recognise it as one of the most complete foods.

But what makes it a true superfood? The beneficial qualities of spirulina lie in its unique and balanced nutritional composition, which provides the body with valuable substances such as:

  • proteins, making up between 60 and 70% of its weight;
  • essential amino acids in proportions equal to those of breast milk;
  • good fats such as linoleic, alpha- and gamma-linolenic acid;
  • vitamins A, D, K, E and B group;
  • minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, potassium, selenium, sodium, copper, phosphorus, magnesium and manganese.

This concentrate of nutrients gives it not only its antioxidant, purifying and energising properties, but also a series of benefits for the sexual sphere.
In particular, the proteins, essential acids, B vitamins, iron and zinc it is rich in are involved in fundamental metabolic processes and, as such, can help regulate the hormonal system, also supporting testosterone production. But let's look at this in more detail.

Spirulina: the most common sexual effects

In addition to what we have just said about hormone regulation, spirulina can have effects on the sexual organs themselves. For example, it:

  • increases blood flow thanks to phycocyanin, the natural pigment that gives spirulina its characteristic blue-green colour, which can improve circulation and reduce blood pressure, benefiting not only the cardiovascular system but also the genital organs;
  • detoxifies the body of toxins thanks to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, helping to improve the function of the sexual organs;
  • prevents cellular ageing by fighting free radicals and
  • reducing oxidative stress, with positive effects on sexual health;
  • speeds up the metabolism, providing more physical and mental energy: always a useful support for a satisfying sex life.

Spirulina and erection

The link between spirulina and erectile dysfunction was the subject of a study published in the journal Oxidative Medicine and Cellular Longevity, which points to a promising therapeutic alternative for men. The research, carried out on mice, showed that adding spirulina to their diet effectively increased the number of mounts and reduced latency, shortening the time between sexual stimulus and erection. But that is not all.

The same study found that spirulina “increases the bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO), reduces inflammation by decreasing the release of contractile prostanoids, enhances the relaxation effect promoted by acetylcholine (ACh), restores damage to contractile reactivity and cavernous relaxation, reduces reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increases the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of cavernous tissue”. A series of benefits that bode well for a natural approach to treating erectile dysfunction, although further research is needed.

Spirulina and vaginal lubrication

Moving from male to female sexuality, let's consider gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), found in spirulina, which belongs to the omega-6 family. GLA appears to have an anti-inflammatory action and to be involved in blood clotting processes. For this reason it is used both as a pain reliever for premenstrual syndrome and as a moisturising factor for dry skin.
This last aspect may help increase vaginal lubrication naturally, making intercourse easier and more pleasant. Something not to be underestimated, especially before and during the menopause.

Spirulina and libido

In sexology, libido “designates sexual desire, which is influenced by hormonal, nervous and psychological factors, and does not necessarily correspond to the subject's actual sexual capacity” (Treccani). It is therefore a complex area, involving not only organic conditions but also psychological factors, stress and lifestyle.

Since spirulina acts as an energiser and natural tonic for both body and mind, it can support libido by acting on the person's general wellbeing. In other words, feeling fit and more energetic also helps you live your sexuality in a healthier and more fulfilling way.

How to take spirulina

To enjoy the countless advantages of spirulina, the recommended amount is 2 to 5 grams a day, added to your diet with:

Products from our exclusive organic cultivation, made in Tuscany. You can buy spirulina online with the guarantee of a quality product of very high nutritional value.

Always remember that before starting any supplement it is important to consult your doctor or nutritionist to make sure it suits your needs and health conditions. Although spirulina has virtually no contraindications, as we explain in our article on the pros and cons of spirulina, it is not recommended for people with autoimmune diseases or phenylketonuria (a genetic disease that makes it impossible to metabolise phenylalanine, an amino acid abundant in spirulina, with potentially serious consequences for growth and for motor, cognitive and psychological development).

So if you are thinking of using it for sexual benefits, ask a healthcare professional for advice that suits you. Research on the subject is still at an early stage and the response can vary significantly from person to person.
